A while back someone asked me if it was worth the price to buy a copy
of the audio version of Ruins. For any latecomers, Mitch reads this
audio book.

Well, I bought Ruins and I have to say that it's great. Two of my co-
workers have listened to it as well and were _very_ impressed by
Mitch's performance.

The basic plot concerns an archaeological expedition of a Mayan ruin
on the Yucatan peninsula. While some people are looting the ruins and
selling off the artifacts they find, others are interested in the
historical significance. When the archaeological party from the U.S.
disappears, Mulder and Scully are brought in, with the cooperation of
the Mexican government. At the ruins, Mulder and Scully discover the
horrifying truth about what happened to the archaeologists -- and
their own lives are endangered. And Mulder discovers something to
confirm his beliefs.

Although we never hear from A.D. Skinner in this story (boo! hiss!),
we do get Mitch's voice throughout the tapes. At least I _think_
it's Mitch's voice. There are times when I totally forgot that he
was the performer. Mitch does a wonderful job with Scully and
Mulder, capturing their speech patterns and rhythms. But it's with
the other characters in the novel that Mitch's talents really shine
through. He is incredible as the Mexican characters, losing any
trace of a Texas twang in the dialogue. Mitch gives each character a
personality and voice of his or her own. He acts out each part,
something that is often missing from audio books. (And isn't it
ironic that Gillian got to act out the role of Skinner in Ground
Zero, while Mitch _didn't_ get to in Ruins? :> )

Confession time. There was one particular sequence in this book that
came close to making me sick. It comes toward the end of the story,
and Mitch's narration of that sequence brings it all too vividly to
life. So you're forewarned. One of my co-workers thought that this
segment was a bit over the top, but I reminded her that this _is_ The
X Files we're talking about here. <g>

Overall, I have to say that Mitch did a outstanding job in his
performance of Ruins. And the story's not bad either. I highly
recommend it.
