We're always looking for other people's answers, thoughts and musings on Michael. Here, thanks to our beloved Il Professore, is another potential topic for discussion: How did Michael end up in Section 1 (crimes, handpicked, etc.?) Write to us here at the Sidekicks Society and we might turn your musings into a feature on this site. Feel free, of course, to come up with your own ideas as well.

An LFN Fairy Tale

by EZBee
Once upon a time there lived a Dark King and Queen who ruled a Dark Kingdom far, far underground. So far were they down in the earth that sunlight never was seen. Creatures of light and all the things their souls carried were unknown to this world. This was the only world they knew therefore theirs was the only world that mattered.

The King and Queen had a son, a Dark Prince, a dutiful son, who obeyed his parents well. In this Kingdom there was also a Young Magician who could see all and know all about everyone in the world, just by the tap of a keyboard. There was also an Old Soldier (who also doubled as court jester) that was responsible for helping keep the dark kingdom well defended and safe.

One day, a Princess of Light, cast out from her own kingdom, was wondering the world, lost, cold and afraid. Then SUDDENLY, very much by accident, she fell through a doorway (that SOMEONE had left open) and found herself in the middle of the Dark Kingdom.

All the residents gathered round her. They had never seen a Child of Light before. All those who came and went through the Dark Kingdom doors belonged to the darkness. She was an oddity to them, something strange and frightening. Someone her like, they had never seen.

They oooohhh'ed and ahhhhh'ed, and they poked and prodded. They quizzed and they questioned, they raged and they nodded. Then finallly, when they felt they had their answers, they stared at her bailfully and shook their heads.

So, then fearful the Princess of Light cried out "I don't belong here!".

"Ahhhhhh" the Dark King replied, "You passed through the doors, so surely you belong here."

Again the terrified princess cried "I am not one of you!"

"Hmmmm" mused the Dark Queen, "You are here with us, therefore you are one of us now."

None could understand her terror, for they were souless creatures, cold and lifeless, too long buried in darkness to understand WHO and WHAT she was.

That is, except for the Dark Prince.

You see, once when he was young, a crack had appeared in the sky of the Dark Kingdom. Before anyone noticed, he had scrambled frantically up over walls and hills, around forests and rivers, climbing the highest mountain in the land. He had to see was was pouring through that crack in the sky. At the tippy, tippy top of the the very highest, tallest mountain, he stood on his tippy, tippy toes and STRETCHED and SSTTRREETTCCHEDD up to touch what was pouring through the crack in the sky. Bright, beautiful sparks of Something Wonderful was pouring through that crack, something that looked, and sounded, and even smelled like nothing he had ever KNOWN before.

And when the sparks of light washed over him, he FELT something he had never FELT before. Something so wonderful like no one in the Dark Kingdom had ever experienced. He felt Joy. And unknown to him, one of those sparks settled into his chest and stayed there for the rest of his life.

Now, needless to say, just as soon as the Dark Prince discovered the Light, he lost his footing and went tumbling down the mountain, hitting his head and knocking himself out. By the time he regained consciencenous, the Young Magician and the Old Soldier together had managed to seal the crack in the sky of the Dark Kingdom, at the angry orders of the Dark King and Queen. They were furious that such a thing had been allowed to happen and vowed that such a dangerous invasion of their dark world would never happen again.

Years passed, and the Prince grew in character and duty. He sometimes remembered the light on the mountain top, yet when he did, the spark in his chest fluttered and beat, like a caged bird, trying to stretch its wings and fly. The Dark Prince felt such a deep sorrow for something he couldn't name, a longing for something that he didn't understand, that he refused to let himself remember the light, because remembering had become a pain beyond his endurance.

Yet, when he saw the Princess, the spark in his chest lept, and fluttered and beat like it had never before. And he suddenly he FELT the Joy he had felt on the mountain that day. And the spark grew and grew, and took to flame. And the flame grew and grew. The Prince knew then WHO she was and WHAT she was. And he knew she was NOT one of them.

And an answering spark lept and fluttered in the Princess' chest; and it too, beat and fluttered, answering to the call of the other spark.

On that day, in the Dark Kingdom, a bond was forged. Stronger that steel, harder than diamonds, unbreakable by mortal means. Beyond the understanding of the residents of the dark world. But the Prince and Princess were bound together by forces neither could understand.

For unbeknownst to all in the Dark Kingdom, a soul was born in a Child of Darkness and the Child of Light was his mate.

For you see, the door was NOT left open by accident........

Michael in Disguise
We wondered aloud recently about why Michael rarely wears a disguise, while Nikita often does. Other than the fact that she's the star of the show, that is -- though from what we have heard, the show plans to focus more on Michael and the other members of the ensemble in the next season! Yeah! Anyway, we've received a number of interesting comments on the question. Check out the Redhead-Not Redhead Page for one fellow fan's answer. Another comment, from Trisha Anne:

"I think that the reason Nikita has to wear disguises when she's in public is because she is supposed to be dead ( she commited suicide in prison ). Newspapers would have written articles about her with pictures as well , and if she didn't wear a disguise she could be recognized by somebody in the general public. So , to the world she's dead , unlike Michael who's death was never faked."

The Archangel Michael
We mused in this space for a while that we think Michael is named after the warrior archangel, and have been trying to formulate some kind of coherent thoughts about that. We've failed so far, but fellow fan Craig Zemke sent us a wonderful mini-essay on the subject, which we're reprinting below with many thanks.

Warrior Archangel
You ask for coherent thoughts on why he's named after the warrior archangel, I'm not sure whether these are coherent or not but here goes. Work often brings me in contact with mentally disabled adults and I do a lot of background psych reading to give myself some kind of framework for understanding what they are going through. I see Michael as suffering from what the Summer '97 issue of "Suicide and Life Threatening Behavior" refers to as "complicated grief". Basically he blames himself for the deaths of his wife and child and is haunted by them constantly. He also lives with a profound sense of self-disgust and self-disappointment - he strikes my as highly intelligent, sensitive, probably artistically inclined. My guess is he was once as idealistic and concerned with morality but has given up on most of his old values to remain alive. In one episode it is mentioned that he didn't speak to anyone for a year after his wife "died" - until Nikita arrived. In this period he was almost certainly depressed, grief stricken, plagued by thoughts of suicide, etc. He was deeply in crisis, basically unable to find any reason to keep living. He was probably very effective at work, because killing people would obviously function as a release for his bottled up rage. But at home between missions, I imagine he had a great deal of trouble getting out of bed, taking care of himself, etc. When Nikita arrives she reminds him of the person he used to be before Section ate his soul. He gives himself a new purpose in life - keeping Nikita alive and intact. His methods often seem cruel - he ruthlessly manipulates her into doing what she has to do (in his view) to stay alive. This pisses her off, and as long as it continues it means they have almost no chance at a romantic relationship. Which is fine with Michael, since he believes his soul is irredeemably lost (he has said things to this effect several times, my guess is he was raised Catholic...) and thinks he would corrupt her if they get to close. In short, this is a sick obsession, totally self-referential and totally unfair to Nikita as an autonomous individual. But he has managed somehow to keep both of them breathing, and in this sense is her guardian angel.

He also has auburn hair. Most auburn haired people refer to themselves as "redheads." Is there a similar debate about Agent Scully (another non-sidekick)? Her hair is almost exactly the same shade as Michael's.

Editor's note: You knew we had to leave in that last paragraph, didn't you?

Season Two Wish List

La Femme Nikita - A Wish List
By Columbine

Our friend Columbine presents her fondest wishes for Season Two of La Femme Nikita, a show that purports to present a strong female lead, but perhaps doesn't succeed every time. Nikita has a complex relationship with her trainer and mentor Michael that's caused a great deal of discussion among fans on various LFN mailing lists. This essay is the result of one of those discussions.

I guess I'm one of those pains in the ass because I don't want Nikita any more clueless. I think one season of angst-ridden adolescent maturing is plenty considering the type of work girl friend does. I want a stronger Nikita, a sneakier one, harder to play head games with. I want one Michael isn't having to cover for all the time. I'd like to see a bit of equality.

An equaling out of the power play that's been going on. A friend mentioned something about a strong woman doing it alone rather than with a man because she needs him. I'm paraphrasing here, but that stuck with me and thats what I want for Nikita.

I don't want her to return because of Michael. To me that just cheapens the huge risk he took to let her go. And sells herself short. I want her to take charge of her life and live it as much as she can on her terms. I want her secure now in the belief of herself. I want "tude" ok I'll play the game by your rules but I'm always going to fight to change the things I see that are wrong with this organization. I want her to bend not break and never stop fighting.

And Michael >sigh> I'm going to further madden people when they read my wish list for Michael. No people its completely "PG" rating here. I still want a dark Michael, an intense Michael. I still want one willing to do those things that make us want to think Ughh I can't believe he did that. Because truthfully it's that darkness about Michael that's fascinating. I want that sometimes frosty Michael, but slightly more willing now to open up and let Nikita in occasionally. I want a Michael with the slow boil option on the sexual tension between M&N.

But I don't want it solely the M&N show this season No. No. No. As much as I enjoy the chemistry between these two and as much fascination as I have with the possible dynamics of them doing the horizontal lambada. These two aren't the only reason I watch. It's an ensemble show; concentrating too much on the relationship of M&N might cause the other areas we find so fascinating to suffer. Too much of a good thing too fast loses something in the cooking. So frankly people I want the DARN NEAR IMPOSSIBLE.

Season Two Premier Musings

One topic of discussion that I think could bring some interesting feedback on is how they will bring Nikita back into the Section after the season finale (unless someone already knows).

1) In the season finale Michael gave her a device in which he could communicate with her. Could it also possibly have been a tracking device. However, why would Michael devise a plan to set her free but then want to track her.

2) Nikita's emotional feelings toward Michael. Should she have a change of heart and go back she could tell the Section that she had gotten out of the building before it exploded but the force of the blast knocked her unconscious and she suffered a concussion whereby she suffered temporary amnesia. When she did remember who she was and what she did then she came back. This would buy her some time to think out her situation and her feelings for Michael.

3) Michael's life could be in jeopardy and Nikita could have found out about it by being in the right place at the right time (overhearing something that she should not have).

4) In the season finale, Michael does not even know if Nikita is alive. Why did she not answer his call? Was it because the train interrupted any form of reception? She did not appear to have heard anything.

Whatever the case, Nikita can't go back to the Section without a valid excuse or she would be putting her life and Michael's life in jeopardy. Obviously (to me) the Section can not know about Michael's scheme or they would both be canceled. Operations could no longer trust Michael to do "the right thing" where Nikita was concerned.

It is a terrific show and I have been an avid fan since the first episode. Everything from the music to the actors are fantastic. I hope the show gathers many more fans over the next season. I am obviously a huge Michael fan but I became a Michael fan after I was hooked on the show. Peta Wilson is terrific as well!!
